Hazelnuts open water swimmers

'The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea'

Set up by Jan Neale in March 2022, The Hazelnuts is an informal group that regularly braves the salty, 'fishing boat-bobbing sea' all year round, for fun, for friendship and that all important sense of well being.

Jan explained, "I've always enjoyed swimming anywhere but during lockdown options were very limited, so I started swimming off Hazelbeach."

Over a curry, Jan mentioned her Hazelbeach swims to neighbour, Jackie, and before you could say 'toe nibbling monkfish', Jan had been joined by a herd of friends and neighbours inspired by her sense of adventure, by her aura of derring-do.

Oscar Wilde

Husband Ed, an accomplished sailor, came up with 'Hazelnuts,' one of those absolutely perfect names just waiting to be plucked from the ether.

Jan set up the inevtable Facebook page.

Neighbours and friends were invited to join.

And the very first life-changing Hazelnuts swim, took place on 26 March 2022 with half a dozen hardy souls goosepimpled to the max. Since that historic moment, new members have joined (now over 100 and counting) for the high tide dips at Hazelbeach. Jan is keen to point out that, 'we welcome everyone, from non swimmers who just like to paddle to those who could give young Adam Peaty a run for his money.'
